A Legacy Worth Leaving

K

aty is a vibrant, growing community whose spirit dates back to the celebration of rice harvests and beyond. Today, Katy is an international and diverse city. As it continues to grow, many families who can trace their roots back to the founding pioneers have a desire to preserve the strength found in Katy’s humble beginnings.

This spirit has continued to make Katy a community where the people truly care for one another. That love and care not only touches the residents, but also those who are visiting or just passing through.

Embracing that spirit, the associates of Keller Williams Premier Realty responded to the challenge to “leave a legacy” issued by one of their leaders, back in 2006.

With the Houston Medical Center moving west, right on Katy’s front doorstep, the agents began brainstorming. Medical facilities being built all around meant people would be coming for treatments, and needing housing options. Cinco Charities was formed by those associates who desired to “build a community of care and support”  and  in  particular  meet  some  of  the

needs of those who come to our community seeking medical care. As our city’s medical services have expanded, Katy has quickly become the temporary home for families who need   treatment for serious and often life-threatening illnesses. It is our desire at Cinco Charities to reach out to those families and give back a measure of the “Katy Spirit” we have received.

We began hosting golf tourneys, Texas hold ‘em poker events, and wine tastings to raise the funds to provide the needed housing. Our first “guest” was housed in 2008, a patient referred to us by Dr. Gregory Chronowski Associate Professor of Radiology Oncology at MD Anderson’s Katy Regional Care Center. As 2013 was drawing to a close and we anticipated the Grand Opening of our Beloved Ballard House, we reflected on having already had the honor of providing a “home away from home” for well over 500 guests who were receiving treatment for a life-threatening illness and their caregivers.

Today, Dr. Chronowski serves on the Board of Directors and continues to be an advocate for putting the word out in the medical community about the FREE housing Cinco Charities provides for patients of all ages, and those who travel from states all over the US, other countries, and our neighboring rural counties for their treatments.

CINCO CHARITIES MEETS THE BALLARDS

In 2011, Dr. Sunil Patel, an oncologist from The Katy MD Anderson Regional Care Center, encouraged one of his patient’s Erin Ballard, to contact Cinco Charities to see how we might be able to work together. Our lives and the lives of people from around the world will never be the same. Even though Erin was fighting her own battle with cancer, she was thinking of others facing that same fight and uncertainties and seeking ways she could help ease their stress. She donated a 3-bedroom home she owns in Katy for Cinco Charities to use to better serve the patients who were our guest. This allowed the flexibility to assist guests for longer periods of

time. With Erin on board with our mission to provide” a home away from home” for those needing temporary housing, we were so thankful to be able to say yes to more of those in need. To our amazement, Monty Ballard Erin’s husband, caught the vision and being a generous individual, he formed The Ballard Foundation to assist the charity financially to make our long- time dream of a Hospital Hospitality House in Katy a reality.

Two years later, Monty and Erin Ballard’s generosity made it possible for us to be planning the Grand Opening of the Ballard House, a 20,000 square foot, 24 guest suite, Texas Hill Country lodge style home, sitting on 3 acres in the heart of Cinco Ranch, one of Texas’ most prestigious master planned communities. DECEMBER 3rd 2013, we celebrated the Grand Opening of The Ballard House with a group of wonderful friends, family, and longtime loyal supporters and moved our first five families in a few days later.

OUR MISSION

Our Mission is to provide temporary housing in our community with a warm, safe environment for individuals and their families who are hospitalized or receiving treatment for a serious medical condition.

We extend our reach and impact by leveraging our cumulative years of experience and strong relationships within the community as well as the medical and support personnel of current and future medical service providers. We continually work to improve and expand our core programs, while also developing plans to meet the future needs of the constantly changing medical community.

We don’t do it alone. We rely on our Friends of Cinco Charities as well as our friends within the National Association of Hospital Hospitality Housing to identify needs and best practices and carry out our mission on the ground. We rely on our strong relationships with the medical community to provide access to health care. We rely on strategic alliances with organizations that have the knowledge and infrastructure to extend our reach. We rely on you – our donors, volunteers, staff and friends.
